March 1, 1924 - May 27, 2018 Pete Ernest Lucas, 94, died Saturday, May 27, at 2:30 a.m., in Alamo. Pete was born March 1, 1924 in Belmont County, St. Clairsville, OH. He received his elementary education in Adena, OH, Wheeling Valley OH, Fairpoint, OH, and graduated from St. Clairsville High School in 1942. After graduation he worked at the Owens Corning Fiberglass Company, Newark OH, until drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He entered the Army in the 283 Signal Pigeon Corps and then advanced to the 39th Signal Heavy Construction Battalion. He served in the European Theater of Operation (ET0) during World War II supporting positions in North France, Rhineland, and Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge, and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in June of 1947. After the war he was discharged and returned to his home in Ohio and entered St. Gregory's Seminary in Mt. Washington Cincinnati, OH. He later transferred to Mt. Angel Seminary in St Benedict, OR. His family moved to Woodland in the fall of 1946 and spring of 1947. Pete followed his family to Woodland and worked at several places in Yolo County. This included Spreckels Sugar Company, at the corner of Court and East Streets. He also worked at the United States Army Worldwide Communications Center for a brief time. He became the first full time Clerk to the Yolo County Supervisors office in 1957 and served them for 26 and one half years, retiring in 1983. He also worked for J.C. Penny Company on weekends in the 1960's to supplement his income. He married June Krewson in 1958, and established their home at 14 N. McKinley Ave., Woodland. After June Lucas' death in 1971, he raised their two children, John and Lorinda Lucas, in Woodland. Pete had many hobbies. He referred to himself as a "Jack of all trades, master of none". He said he was never bored, there was always something to do, or be done. He did all his own house painting until FY 2000. Gardening and canning summer vegetables and fruits was another of his loves. Building and refinishing furniture gave him many hours of enjoyment. He also learned to weave (caning) chair seats. He even helped others in the building of their homes in Woodland. He loved the challenge to fix broken items and make them better than new. He also loved music and was a member of the Yolo County Concert Band, the Woodland Organ Club, the Woodland Back Room Band, the Woodland Concert Association, the Holy Rosary Choir, the Davis and Woodland Senior Melody Makers, the Sacramento Ben Ali Shriners Band. He was also a member of the St. Clairsville Alumni Association, the Retired Public Employees Association of California, and the 39th Signal Corps CrossArm reunion group. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; his wife, June; his father, Peter M. Lucas; brother, Dr. Raymond Lucas; brother, Reverend Eugene Lucas, and his sister, Madelyn Gunter. He is survived by his daughter, Lorinda lacopi, and son, John Lucas; two grandsons, Benjamin John Brice Lucas, and Peter Michael Lucas. The family kindly requests no flowers be sent as it was Pete's wishes for donations to be made to either Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Woodland, or the Woodland Senior Center, in lieu of flowers.
