In memory of
Polly Farmer, who lived at 152 Airport Road in Hillsville, passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Commonwealth Senior Living in Hillsville, Virginia at the age of 89, following a series of short illnesses, with family and friends at her side. She will be buried next to her husband, Collin, in the Shiloh Cemetery, close to her home. Polly was born to Cable Bowman and Viola McMillian Bowman on April 6, 1929, on a large apple orchard nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, at the foot of Orchard Gap, in Ararat, Virginia. Polly was the youngest of several siblings, with most having survived to adulthood. Her siblings included sisters Dole, Hassie, Nettie, Flossie and Rita, and brothers Howard, Joe, Daniel, and Clay. She maintained a close relationship with her nieces, nephews, and their families throughout her life. In 1952 she married Collin Edward Farmer of Hillsville, who become a well-known and respected Professional Engineer and Certified Land Surveyor in the area. Collin worked for the Blue Ridge Parkway for many years, and passed away in August 2008. Polly is survived by: two sons, Joseph Collin Farmer of Tracy, California, and John Earl Farmer and wife, Joanne of Hillsville, Virginia; six grandchildren, Lee, Robert, Joshua, Clayton, Gabrielle, and Christina; and three great grandchildren, Lemuel, Silas, and Colin. Polly's oldest son, Joe, is a doctorial-level chemical engineer, and after several decades service, retired from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Her youngest son, John, is a line foreman in the City of Radford Electrical Department, and a local farmer. Polly's oldest grandson, Lee, graduated with a B.S. degree in Psychology from Radford University, is an accomplished guitarist and singer, has strong spiritual insights, with several sermons to his credit, and now lives and works in Cana. Lee and his wife Lisa have one son, Lemuel, Polly's first great grandson. Robert has served several years in the Navy, with tours in Afghanistan and elsewhere. His accomplishments include a commission as an Officer in the Navy, and B.S. and M.S. degrees from Virginia Tech. He is employed by the Department of Defense. Robert and his wife, Jenifer, have one son, Silas, Polly's third great grandchild. Josh has also served several years in the Navy, with tours in Afghanistan, The Middle East, The Naval Base in San Diego, and elsewhere. His accomplishments include being named Sailor of the Year, a commission as a Naval Officer, and a B.S. degree from Liberty University. Josh and his wife, Jade, have one beautiful son, Colin, Polly's second great grandson. Clayton holds a degree in Design and Technical Drawing from Wytheville, and now works as a draftsman for a company in North Carolina. His fiancée, Amy, is a teacher. Polly's oldest granddaughter, Gabrielle graduated from a Carroll College, a Catholic University in Helena, Montana, with a B.S. in Public Health. She is employed in the Department of Public Health and Child Protective Services in Helena, Montana, where she continues to live. Her youngest granddaughter, Christina, is a College Student in California, where she is working towards a degree in Child Development, and works part-time while going to school. Christina has enjoyed traveling from California to spend several summers with her grandmother. Due to the logistics of family members having to travel, services will be held at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, VA. The visitation will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 6:30 until 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Alton Bledsoe officiating. Burial will then follow in the Shiloh Cemetery. Immediately after the burial, a reception will be held at Shiloh United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
