TUSCALOOSA – Winston Owens, age 89, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., died February 24, 2018, at Forest Manor Nursing Home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2018, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. John Drawhorn officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Woodfin Owens; brothers, Webster and Aubrey; and five infant grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Carolyn R. Owens of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; son, Darren Owens (Kristi Owens) of McCalla, Ala.; brother, Paul Owens (Edna) of Newbern, Ala.; grandchildren, Jonathan, Aaron, Anna Kate, Elijah and Emily Owens of McCalla, Ala.; sisters-in-law, Betty Owens and Myrt Owens; and a host of nieces and nephews. Winston was born in Hale County and graduated from Greensboro High School. His younger years were spent deer hunting with family or flying his plane with his friends. He served in the U.S. Army. He worked at Central Foundry eight years, the trucking industry 30 + years and security at Pine Valley Retirement for 11 years. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Adams, Stan Griffin, Tom Griffin, Mike Montgomery, Randy Owens and Craig Shelby. Honorary pallbearers are Honorable Bill Poole, Hargrove Memorial United Methodist Church members, Elisa Mickey and Michael Gartman, Dr. Bob Grubbs and staff of University Family Practice, and Forest Manor Nursing Home staff and caregivers (Station 2). Memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association or Hargrove United Methodist Church.
