In memory of
Joseph C. Toschik
Retired Master Sargent, Joseph Carmen Toschik, age 71, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2018 in Half Moon Bay, CA. Joe was born October 22, 1946 in Milwaukee, WI. His family moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1951 where he attended St. Gregory's Elementary School and West Phoenix High School. While there, he was active in the ROTC program. After graduation, he attended the University of San Francisco for one year, where he began his life-long love of the Bay Area. Joe graduated from Arizona State University and began his first career as a Master Weather Forecaster in the U.S. Air Force in 1968. Joe was fluent in the German language and served in Germany for two tours of duty, as well as in Thailand, and several bases in the United States. He was awarded several Medals. Among them were the Meritorious Service, Air Force Commendation, Army Commendation, Air Force Achievement, seven Good Conduct medals, National Defense, Humanitarian Service, NCO Academy and five Outstanding Unit Awards. His last tour of duty was at March AFB in Riverside, CA in 1989. After retiring from the Air Force, he studied at San Jose State University and obtained his Masters Degree in Library Science. Thus, he began his second career as a Research Librarian at Half Moon Bay, California. Joe resided for many years in El Granada, CA. He spoke fondly of walking to the Hardware Store to get his morning coffee and then a walk to the Bay to check on "his Pacific". He was active in his community; as an amateur photographer he was proud to have had his work displayed at the Half Moon Bay Public Library. He was a faithful weekly usher at HMB Community United Methodist Church. Joe also was an official volunteer Plover watcher. Joe was scheduled to retire this March. Joe's love of books began at an early age. With his family, he visited a small branch library in Milwaukee that was within walking distance of his home, and after their move to Phoenix in 1951, his parents gladly drove the children to the Main Library where he became friends with the Research Librarian who would feed his love of History books. Joe is survived by his sister Catherine Toschik Newberry of Johns Creek, GA, an aunt, Catherine Toschik Tilson of Texas, and several cousins. Also surviving and remembering their Uncle Joe are Cathy's children Paul (and Martha) Giza of Peoria, AZ and Anne Giza of Interlochen, MI. Facebook was a great way for Joe to keep up with all the family activities. Loving and remembering Joe are his close friends, co-workers, and fellow worshippers at Half Moon Bay Community United Methodist Church, especially Mary and Don Patterson, Robin and Ken Murphy, Dan Rossa, and Annie Malley. Miller-Dutra Coastside Chapel will be providing Cremation followed by a scattering of the ashes at Joe's beloved Pillar Point. A Memorial Service will be held at HMB Community United Methodist Church with Pastor Lisa Warner-Carey presiding on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial Donations may be made to the Half Moon Bay Library or the HMB Community United Methodist Church.
