Esther Marie "Dodie" Hummell
Esther "Dodie" Marie Hummell Corpus Christi, TX Dodie M. Hummell passed away from complications of lung cancer on Saturday, January 6, 2018. She will be remembered for her fierce independence, remarkable sense of humor and boundless creativity. Dodie was born April 28, 1930 at Tripler Army Hospital, Oahu, Hawaii. She graduated high school at the Tokyo American School, Tokyo Japan in 1948, while her father was stationed there, and went on to study Fine Arts at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in 1954. She later earned her Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Arts from Corpus Christi State University in 1977. From the time Dodie moved to Corpus Christi in 1960 she was a tireless volunteer for many arts organizations including Little Theater Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi Museum of Art, Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra and Corpus Christi Concert Ballet. Dodie was an "Art Mother" at Montclair Elementary, while her four children attended. She was a graphic artist, creating many posters for LTCC productions and Art Jamboree, an annual regional art festival held in South Bluff Park. Dodie served as an Art Museum of South Texas docent; she also served as Executive Director of the Corpus Christi Arts Council 1979-1985. Dodie won Sammy Awards for her acting (Best Actress, as Carrie Watts in "Trip to Bountiful," 1992; Best Actress as Fonsia Dorsey in "Gin Game," 1996) and for set design ("Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," 1963). She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Driftwood Garden Club for many years. Dodie was an excellent chef, a painter, sculptor, writer and devoted arts advocate. She is survived by her three sisters Wanda Pospahala, Harriet Pittman and Pat Rigsbee, as well as the father of her children, Paul R. Hummell; daughter Sharon Forsythe, sons Christopher, Michael and Matthew Hummell, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Per Dodie's request there are no services. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Friends of the Corpus Christi Public Libraries, Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, or Art Museum of South Texas.
