Betty June Nolan Charters
Betty June Nolan Charters July, 1921 - Dec. 31, 2017 Betty June Charters passed away peacefully in her sleep from natural causes Dec. 31, 2017. A native Oregonian, Betty was born to Wm. "Art" and Lula Nolan in Portland in July, 1921. She was raised in St. Johns and on the family farm in Barton eventually graduating from Roosevelt High School. Betty went to Oregon State College where she lived in The Pines cooperative. One evening as she was studying in the library, she caught the attention of another Oregon State student, Richard "Rich" Charters. He arranged an introduction which led to a 69 year marriage until his passing in 2012. In 1953, they built their home in Southwest Portland where they raised their two daughters, Carol and Jan. Betty went to work for Pacific Northwest Bell until she retired in 1977. Preparing for retirement, Rich and Betty moved to Summerfield in 1976. They made many wonderful friends as they joined the golf clubs, the Huff-n-Puff square dancers, Summerfield social events, and attending Calvin Presbyterian church. Betty enjoyed bridge, reunions with her friends from The Pines and high school friends Doris and Fran, aerobics, fishing (she frequently caught the largest salmon), traveling to Elderhostel classes, vacationing at properties in Lincoln City and Central Oregon, and especially the annual cousins' reunions. Betty is survived by daughters, Carol (Lee) and Janice (Al); sister, Lu Neal; sister-in-law, Juanita Nolan; four grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Her husband, Rich; and brother, Charles preceded her in death. The family would like to thank the staff of Marquis Tualatin Assisted Living and Hospice Care of the Northwest for their kind care during Betty's last months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty's name to the Casey Eye Institute through the OHSU Foundation, Mail Stop 45, P.O. Box 4000, Portland, OR 97208-9852.
