Ruth Olive Kavanagh, 98 Devoted mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother Ruth Olive Kavanagh of Castleton Corners, who was born on May 12, 1919, passed away on Jan. 10, 2018. Born at home in East Orange, N.J., to Mary Veronica Brasselle and John Henry Knowles, she was the last survivor of eight children. Ruth was the beloved wife of 63 years to Harry Kavanagh from April 6, 1942, until his death on Aug. 29, 2005. She was the devoted mother of Patricia Ann Dellomo and John Henry Kavanagh; mother in-law of Anthony Edward Dellomo and Marianne Mullin Kavanagh; adored grandmother of Andrew Edward Dellomo and Timothy Martin Dellomo and the late Brian Anthony Dellomo, and great-grandmother of Kayla Moss, Katrina Rose, Veronica Joy, Emma Rose, Riley Jean, Harley Grace, and Coraline Mae Dellomo. As a young woman, Ruth was a recognized competitive swimmer, excelling in the backstroke. She was very proud of her numerous awards and medals that she won swimming in races that were held in Brooklyn at the Steeplechase Piers. She served as a volunteer for many years at the Veterans Hospital in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn where her husband, a World War II veteran, received medical attention . A longtime resident of Brooklyn, she moved to Staten Island and lived with her daughter for 10 years before moving into Clove Lakes Health Care in Feb. 2012. She was a parishioner of St. Teresa's Church and a member of the Castleton Corners AARP and Golden Age Club . A Memorial Mass will be held in the spring. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Casey Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory to the Brian A. Dellomo Scholarship Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
