Dorothy Farris Barlow
Dorothy Farris Barlow, 86, of Port St. Joe, passed away on December 20, 2017. She was born January 17, 1931 to Esker J. and Eula Sellers Farris. She graduated from Geneva High School in 1948 and from there went to Troy State University where she received her B.S. Degree in Education. Dorothy was a member of the Honor Society at Troy, as well as an athlete who excelled in tennis, softball and golf. Dorothy began her teaching career in Chipley, FL, where she taught 3rd grade for several years. During this time, she married Billy D. Barlow and the couple moved to Port St. Joe where they both taught elementary school for many decades. She was a member of the Women's Teaching Honor Society-Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Beta Chapter. She was a recipient of Gulf County Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year, and joined the Gulf County Retired Teachers Association following her career which encompassed more than 40 years, and generations of students. As a member of Long Avenue Baptist Church, Dorothy served God as a nursery school worker, a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Bereavement Committee. She served on the board of Emerald Coast Credit Union and was also a member of the Ladies Golf Association. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Don Barlow; siblings, Esker J. Farris, Jr., Ada Sue Farris, Earline Taylor, Willie Mae Daughtery, Eugene Farris and Roland Sellers. She is survived by her daughters, Phoebe Barlow and Vicki Barlow, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Long Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Eli Prine officiating. Entombment followed in Holly Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Long Avenue Baptist Church, Gulf County Friends of the Library or the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Dorothy Barlow.
