PINELLAS PARK, Fla. — John Gardner Oliver, son of the late John Webster Oliver and Laura Mae McClelland Oliver, was born November 5, 1930, in Detroit, Mich. He attended University of Michigan where he received his Electrical Engineering degree, later receiving his Masters in Electrical Engineering from University of Florida. His career included time at Alcoa, Sperry Rand, as an educator at Boca Ciega High School and later at AT&T and BellSouth where he retired. At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, holding active church memberships throughout his life. Mr. Oliver was a dedicated member of the Gideons International, Newberry, S.C., Camp, and a member of the First Baptist Church, Newberry, S.C. He proudly served the country in the United States Army in his younger years. Mr. Oliver enjoyed Amateur Radio (call sign WA4MIN) and the challenge of a good math problem. He believed in being generous, always looking for opportunities to share with others in need. Mr. Oliver was as caring as he was forgiving. His Christian life was impactful and will forever remain in the lives of all who knew him. He quietly departed this life Monday, January 16, 2017 at Providence Hospital in Columbia, S.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Laura Oliver, and his grandson, Sean Thomas Garland Douglass. His life will forever be cherished in the lives of his sister, Laurel (Michael) Gustafson, Newberry, S.C.; children, John K. (Paula) Oliver, Sanford, Fla., Mark (Sue) Oliver, Cary, N.C., Kelley Oliver (Landy) Douglass, Mount Dora, Fla.; grandchildren, Nicholas, Joy, Hannah, Daniel, Scooter (Melissa), Maryn, Tegan, Skye; the mother of his children, Rebecca Kornbau Lopatka; former spouse, Ethilene Smith Smith Boudreau Oliver. Services will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017, at 3 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home, Pinellas Park, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor his life may be made to New Tribes Mission (1000 East 1st Street, Sanford, FL) and Gideons International (PO Box 795, Newberry, SC 29108).
