Vernon ""Red"" Baker
FRANKLINVILLE - Vernon "Red" Baker of Green St. died Monday (Jan. 2, 2017) at the Olean General Hospital. Born Sept. 16, 1931, in Humphrey, he was the son of Frank and Gladys Roberts Baker. In 1949, in Ellicottville, he married Gladys Frazier. On July 11, 1981, in Jamestown, he married Shirley Nemchek who survives. Mr. Baker was a dairy farmer in both South Dayton and Great Valley for several years. He also worked for Block Brothers of Great Valley, and last worked for Koike-Aronson's Machine of Arcade. "Red" enjoyed planting flowers and tending to his garden. He was an exempt Great Valley fireman. Surviving besides his wife, at the Pines in Machias, are two sons, Dennis (Linda) Frazier of Sandusky and Vernon "Paul" Baker of Allegany; five daughters, Darlene (Burt) Carpenter of Salamanca, Katherine (John) Smith of Salamanca, Cynthia (Leonard) Nugent of Borger, Texas, and Deborah (James) Scott and Marcia (Rex) Bartlett, both of Franklinville; many grand- and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Isabelle Priest of Warsaw and Madeline Hartwell of Delevan; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Raymond Baker, Dumont Baker, Benjamin Baker and Elton Baker; and three sisters, Ella Baker, Bertha Reed and Marie Vaughn. Friends may gather with the family on Friday (Jan. 6, 2017) from noon to 2 p.m. at the Babbitt & Easton Funeral Home, 7 N. Main St., Franklinville, where his funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Celebrating his life will be the Rev. Pete Spear, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Franklinville. Interment will be in Maples Cemetery in Mansfield, N.Y. Memorials may be made to the Franklinville Fire Dept. Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 74, Franklinville, NY 14737.
