George Jacob "Jay" Zainey
George Jacob (Jay) Zainey, age 92, prominent bandleader and insurance executive, passed away on March 22, 2016. He is survived by Ann, his beloved wife of 69 years, and was a dedicated father to his sons, Robert (Jacquelyn), Jay (Joy), Michael (Lisa), and daughter, Noel Owens (Jimmy), grandfather of Margaret Roux (Tre'), Jay Christopher Zainey, Jr. (Casey), Andrew Zainey, Dr. Scott Zainey (Ann), Kathryn Gonski (Ryan) and great grandfather of Louis Roux, Henry Roux, and Jacques Zainey. He was preceded in death by his father, Abraham, mother, Marie, brothers Fred and Joe, and sister Genevieve. The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Drs. Fortune Dugan, Stephen Ramee, Freddy Abi-Samra and their staff for all of their efforts and care. Zainey served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as acting Bandmaster of U.S. Navy Fleet Band # 89 in the Asia-Pacific arena. He returned to college after the war and graduated with honors from Butler University. Born in Indianapolis on August 2, 1923, he relocated to the Greater New Orleans area in 1948. He was well known in the music world for keeping alive ballroom dance music of the big band era and served as vice-president emeritus of the New Orleans Musicians' Union for many years. He was an active member of the Syrian-Lebanese American Club of New Orleans in which he served several years as president. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Angela Merici Church at 12pm on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 with visitation beginning at 9:30am. Burial will be in Calvary Mausoleum, St. Patrick Cemetery #1. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to St. Andrew's Village, P.O. Box 444, Abita Springs, LA 70420 are preferred.
