Bernice Elizabeth "Bette" Hopkins
Bernice Elizabeth Hopkins, known to everyone as "Bette", of Black Lake, died at Hospice House in Cheboygan on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 at the age of 77. Born on Aug. 15, 1938 in Savannah, Ga., Bette was the daughter of Ernie "EA" and Bernice "Penny" (Johnson) Dacey. She married Richard "Dick" Hopkins on June 7, 1958 in Beverly Hills, Mich. and they made their home in Royal Oak. Her most important job was being a loving wife and a wonderful mother, but Bette also worked as a bookkeeper for the Vulcan Iron Company in Detroit. After retirement, she and Dick built a home on Black Lake, where they had enjoyed many vacations throughout the years. They enjoyed living on the lake and settled into a new routine quite nicely. Every Friday at 5 p.m. Bette and Dick joined friends for dinner at Lorenzo's and each Sunday afternoon they enjoyed a meal at Manzanna's. Friendly and outgoing, Bette knew everyone and someone was always stopping at their table to say hello. And though she enjoyed going out for dinner, Bette enjoyed feeding people even more. A wonderful hostess, you could count on her making you something to eat if you stopped by. She loved to bake and was always making cookies to give to someone. Bette was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed quilting. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Onaway, the Peaceful Lighthouse Quilters of Moltke, and was active with the Friends of the Onaway Library. Surviving Bette is her husband of more than 57 years, Dick Hopkins of Black Lake; daughter, Debra (Lyndon) Pilcher of Shelby Twp.; son, Donald (Holly) Hopkins of Grapevine, Texas; and grandchildren, Michael and Erica Pilcher of Shelby Township and Jami and Shelby Hopkins of Grapevine, Texas. Bette also leaves her brother, Ernie (Joan) Dacey of White Lake; her sister, Carlene (Doug) Wardlow of Fenton; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Bette was preceded in death by her parents, EA and Penny Dacey and her brother, Patrick Dacey. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Onaway. Pastor Carmen Cook and Hospice Chaplain Diane Meyer will officiate. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Bette to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, c/o Cheboygan Hospice House, 360 Connable Ave., Petoskey, MI 49770 or to the United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 762 , Onaway, MI 49765. Condolences may be shared with Bette's family at www.chagnonfh.com.
