FORT WORTH -- Rubylee Cantrell Gracy, 96, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Terrace, 1600 Texas St., Fort Worth. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1000 Penn St., Fort Worth, Texas 76102. Rubylee was one of 12 children born to Oscar and Kate Cantrell. She spent her earliest years in Valdasta, in eastern Collin County, but moved with her family to McKinney, where she finished elementary, junior high and high school. Rubylee was an ambitious person who always had a goal to achieve, and one of her goals was to become a teacher. She worked her way through college, attending Mary Hardin Baylor for a year and later graduating in the late 1930s from what was then East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce. In 1940, she married her childhood sweetheart, Carl Gracy, a marriage that lasted over 60 years. The union produced two sons, Robert, born in 1941, and Ben, born in 1944. Rubylee taught elementary, junior high and high school grades in Blue Ridge; McKinney; New Orleans, La.; and Pomona, Calif. She concluded a distinguished career in education as the director of pupil personnel services for the Pomona Unified School District in California, retiring in the late 1980s. Shortly after her retirement, she and Carl returned to Texas, settling in Plano and later Fort Worth. After Carl's death in 2002, her final place of residence was Trinity Terrace Retirement Center in Fort Worth. Rubylee will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; and her 11 brothers and sisters. Survivors: Sons, Robert and wife, Peggy, of San Antonio and Ben and wife, Linda, of San Jose, Calif.; grandchildren, Joseph (Kelly) of San Jose, Calif., Thomas (Jennifer) of Cupertino, Calif., Dr. Noelle Gracy of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Dr. Delaney Gracy of New York City; great-grandchildren, Vivien Egan and Liam Egan of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Bridget Kelly of New York City and Will Gracy of San Jose, Calif.
