Elizabeth J. Macan
Elizabeth J. Macan (Hack), 64, of Metuchen, N.J., passed away Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the Francis E. Parker Home, Piscataway, N.J. Visitation is Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:45 a.m. at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave. (Route 27), Metuchen, N.J., followed by a 10:15 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. Elizabeth, or "Liz" as she was perhaps better known by, was proudest of her three children and their various accomplishments. She spent countless hours making sure they got to music lessons, sports teams, art classes, sailing events and many other activities that she encouraged them to participate in. Although diagnosed with MS in the prime of her life, Elizabeth remained active and engaged with those around her and continued to fight for her independence and never gave up her spirit of determination or her loving concern for the wellbeing of others. She will be remembered fondly for bringing joy and happiness to others despite her own circumstances and for inspiring her family and friends to always live their lives to the fullest. Born and raised in Perth Amboy, N.J., Elizabeth resided in Metuchen, N.J., for over 30 years. She graduated from Perth Amboy High School in 1966 and went on to receive her R.N. from Middlesex County Community College in 1968, graduating with the very first class of nursing students. In 1969, she married her high-school sweetheart from Perth Amboy, Robert E. Macan, and in 1975 they moved to Rolfe Place in Metuchen. She worked as a registered nurse throughout Middlesex County, eventually retiring from Rutgers University Student Health Center in New Brunswick in 1990. Elizabeth was a parishioner of St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen and was a member of the Raritan Yacht Club Ladies Auxiliary for more than 40 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Anna Hack (Hrabinski), also of Metuchen, and a brother, Ernest. Surviving are her devoted husband, Robert E. Macan; her children, Patrick Macan and his wife, Jenny, of Cebu, Philippines; Michael Macan and his wife, Wendy, of Columbia, Md., and Juliana Macan and her partner, Sean, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Surviving siblings include her brother, Karl, of Ringwood, N.J., and sister, Karen, of Woodbridge, N.J. Elizabeth also leaves behind her four grandchildren, Nicole, Connor, Brendan and Liam. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, New Jersey Metro Chapter, 1 Kalisa Way, Suite 205, Paramus, N.J. 07652.
