Hampton - Dorothy Staples Durrette, born February 11, 1923, passed away at the age of 89 on Saturday, January 12, 2013. She was a native of Newport News, VA and a resident of Hampton for most of her life. Dorothy was a devoted mother and wife. She was the secretary/treasurer of Durrette Inc., a commercial fishing business, and a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Hampton. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Eldridge and Janie Cox Staples; husband, Floyd Evans Durrette; granddaughter, Kathryn Turner; and seven siblings. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryle Gumaer, Judy Jones (Dale) both of Hampton; Betty Pettingill (Wynn) of Idaho Falls, ID, and Teresa Colgan (Bob) of Scottsboro, AL; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen S. Walker of Newport News; and brother-in-law, Phillip Durrette of Costa Rica.A celebration of Dorothy's life will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 15 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Assoc., 500 E. Plume St., #110, Norfolk, VA, 23510, or the American Diabetes Assoc., 1701 N.
