Robert E. O'Donnell
Valrico, Fla. - Robert E. O'Donnell, 82, entered into eternal rest on Dec. 16, 2010, of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was born on Aug. 24, 1928, to Leo and Margaret (Finn) O'Donnell in New London. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret Fitzgerald. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Agnes (Foster); his son, Terrance of Palm Harbor, Fla.; granddaughter, Kelly of New Port Richey, Fla.; great-granddaughter, Kyleigh Driver; his brother, Leo O'Donnell (Grace) of Niantic; a niece, Kathy Poblete (Tom) of New London; many cousins and friends. Bob proudly served our country in the U.S. Army Artillery, going to Japan with the first Occupational Force under General MacArthur. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal-Japan. Bob attained his bachelor of arts degree in accounting at Bryant University in Providence in 1950. He was payroll administrator for General Dynamics, Electric Boat Division for 38 years and then retired to Florida in 1989. He was a charter and life member of the Order of Elks #2163 in Groton, a life member of the VFW #6287, a member and past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3566, a proud member of the Amvets #26, a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #1880, and an American Legion member of Post 0400 in Florida. Bob also was a past president of the Electric Boat Athletics Club, initiating many programs such as the Retirees Club. There are no services or memorials at this time. Bob will be honored at a later date in Connecticut with a celebration of life and his ashes will be buried in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery. No flowers, please. Donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
