Ts'ing-Hi Tong
Ts'ing-Hi Tong, 86, of Jacksonville, died Thursday night, March 18, 2010, at home. He was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Jiading, China, the son of Yu-Nong and Tsang-tse Tong. He married Chi-Hang Luong on Dec. 31, 1970, and she survives. He is also survived by two sons, Christopher and Anthony; two brothers, Ming Doong and Qin-Ren Tong (wife, Wei-Qin); one sister, Qing-Jian (husband, Sze Xin-Chao), in China; one sister, Qin-Fu (husband, T K Thi) of New York; five nephews; and six nieces. He graduated from Universite L'Aurore, Cours Preparatoire in Shanghai, China. He was a news editor in the Chinese Section of Radio France-Asie in Saigon, Vietnam, from 1949-1956. He also worked for the British Consulate in Saigon for eight years. He then pursued his college education at Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1958; transferred a year later to Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and a minor in French from SIU in 1961. In 1963, he received a Master of Science degree in Mathematics at DePaul University, in Chicago. While in graduate school, he was a research editor at Accelerated Instructions Methods Corporation in Chicago from 1961-63. He then worked as a science education editor at Basic Systems in New York, New York for a year. He joined the Mathematics department at Illinois College in 1964 until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the Mathematical Association of America from 1964 to 2004. Ts'ing-Hi was a loyal and loving husband and father. He was passionate about teaching and passing mathematics knowledge to his students. A celebration of life will be held 4 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-Mormon, 1053 East Vandalia Road, Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Illinois College (please specify your gift for the T.H. Tong Computer Science Award Fund) or to Memorial Home Hospice.
