Dr. Betty Lynch Bowman
BURLINGTON - Dr. Betty Lynch Bowman, 85, of 814 N. Graham-Hopedale Road, Burlington, died at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after almost two years of failing health.
A native of Orange County, Dr. Bowman was the wife of J. Fred Bowman, who survives, and the daughter of the late Zebulon H. Lynch and the late Alma Hodge Lynch.
Dr. Bowman graduated from Aycock High School in Orange County in 1940. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Elon College in 1944, her Masters in Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1957 and her Doctor in Education degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1971.
She began her career in education at Nathanael Greene School in 1944 as an English and French teacher. She then moved on to teach and become principal of Elon Elementary School until she became the first principal of Smith Elementary School in 1968. She served there until becoming principal of Broadview Middle School from 1976 until 1989 when she retired from the Alamance Burlington School System.
She was a member of the ABWA, the Retired School Personnel, ADK and the NEA. Dr. Bowman was a former Alamance Community College Trustee and served on numerous state educational boards. She was past honored as Woman of the Year for the Burlington Civitan Club and the ABWA.
Dr. Bowman was a member of the Beverly Hills United Church of Christ in Burlington where she was a Sunday School and Bible Class teacher for over 60 years. She was also a member of the church choir and the Women's Fellowship.
In addition to her husband, Fred, of the home, Dr. Bowman is survived by her children; Dr. Tom Bowman and his wife, Dr. Karolen Bowman, of North Wilkesboro, Dr. Zebulon Bowman and his wife, Rebecca, of Houston, Texas, Nan Bowman Wooten and her husband, Steve, of Guilford County and Freda Bowman Black of Durham County; 11 grandchildren, Dr. John Daniel Bowman, David Neil Bowman, Paul Thomas Bowman, Kathren Lee Bowman, Daniel Jefferson Bowman, Michael Jameson Bowman, Joshua Steven Wooten, Maria Dee Wooten, Elizabeth Kaye Wooten, Jordan Leigh Black and Jeanette Bowman Black; three sisters, Dorothy Greene of Elon, Estelle Willard of Elon, Grace Holt of Mebane and her brother, John "Jack" Lynch of Elon.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, October 9, 2009, at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington from 5 until 7 p.m.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 11 a.m. in Beverly Hills United Church of Christ, 715 N. Church Street, Burlington. Officiating will be the Rev. Rosser L. Clapp. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Elon. Dr. Bowman will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beverly Hills United Church of Christ.
