HOUSTON, Texas - Charles Boyd Fondow, 64, of Wichita Street, Houston, Texas, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2011 in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, St. Michael, Barbados. A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Harold Charles and Alma Shepherd Fondow and grandson of Bertha Shoe Shepherd, who he called Twomama. He was a 1965 graduate of Walter Williams High School, received his nursing degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, his Doctorate of Public Health from the University of Texas, and later retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Houston, Texas. Charlie loved to travel and had traveled all over the world. He is survived by his partner, Alexi; brother, Kenneth Harold Fondow and wife Patricia, of Greensboro; sister, Betty Fondow Cross and husband Jerry, of Burlington; nephews, Jonathan Fondow and wife Debbie and Timothy Cross and wife DeeAnne; nieces, Tammy Cross Turner and husband Chick and Jennifer Fondow Stone and husband Keith; great-nephew, Bryan Cross; great-nieces, Mikhayla Turner, Mackenzie Turner, Meredith Turner, Elizabeth Fondow and Ansley Fondow. Memorial services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Fred Treadwell. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
