In memory of
Cleveland Nisby was born on July 24, 1919 in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, to the union of Samuel and EdMonuie Nisby. He moved to Beaumont at an early age. He passed away at his home Friday, December 23, 2011, at the age of 92. He was a faithful member of Starlight Baptist Church, serving as a deacon for more than 60 years. Mr. Nisby was a long-time civil rights activist and community leader who fought and won many cases against discrimination and injustices in all forms. He worked tirelessly for a better quality of life for all people. A viewing will be held at Mercy Funeral Home, 1295 Gladys Street, Beaumont on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. On Wednesday, December 28, 2011, a viewing will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Starlight Baptist Church, 1090 Buford Street, Beaumont. A Celebration of Life and Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Starlight. Survivors remaining to cherish his memories include his wife, Dora Nisby; daughters, Linda Johnson (Harvey), Cheryl Caziere, of Carson, CA; sons, Ronald Nisby (Brenda), Anchorage, AK, Claver Kamau-Imani, Houston, TX, Reginald Nisby (Sharon) Los Angeles, Ca.; sisters, Elselena King, Beaumont, TX, Mable Harris, Washington, LA, Annie Mae Mott, Houston, TX; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. One daughter, Betty Dozier, preceded him in death on November 12, 2011.
