Lawrence Lee "Larry" Stanley
Lawrence Lee "Larry" Stanley Asheville - Lawrence Lee "Larry" Stanley, of Asheville, North Carolina, passed Saturday, June 5, 2021 with his wife and friends by his side. He was sixty-five. Larry was born January 11, 1956, to the late Jeanne Throckmorton Stanley and Lee Roy Stanley in Reidsville, North Carolina. He earned a BS from UNC-Greensboro, and a Master in Experiential Education from Mankato State University. Larry had a kind, gentle spirit, a desire to help others and a quirky sense of humor. He loved the outdoors and of his many adventures, biking from Murphy to Manteo, kayaking with whales and ziplining with his family in Costa Rica were highlights for him. His compassion for others and love of the outdoors shaped his professional life and he worked as an Outward Bound instructor, teacher for the hearing impaired, and a counselor for adolescents and adults. He volunteered at his son's school and for the Humane Society. Larry was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in his early 50's and spoke publicly about living with the disease to help raise awareness. He found peace in riding his bike and did so as long as his health allowed. Even as the disease progressed, Larry's sense of humor persisted bringing smiles and laughter to those around him. Surviving Larry is his wife of 19 years Michelle Goyeau; his son, Zachary Stanley, of Asheville, North Carolina; sister Meredith Smothers (John) of Greensboro, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews, and their children. He loved his family and was the proudest father to Zach. He will be missed beyond words. A private service will be held to honor Larry at a later date. Our family's deepest gratitude for the wonderful staff of Brookdale Walden Ridge, Aston Park, and Four Seasons hospice.
