Charles M. Hammond
Hammond, Charles M. Dr. Charles M. Hammond, 91, of Crystal Lake, Illinois passed away peacefully on January 2, 2021. Charles was born on March 30, 1929 in Hamden, Connecticut to Charles F. and Helen (Milles) Hammond. He graduated from Hamden High School and then attended Mercersburg Academy and Hopkins School. He continued his education at the University of Michigan and earned his PhD in Metallurgical Engineering in 1959 while also serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserves. After graduation, Charles went to work for Allegheny Ludlum in Pennsylvania and won numerous awards for his research. In 1965 he moved to Alliance, Ohio to work for TRW Metals where he eventually became plant manager. Charles continued working as an independent consultant for several years until he retired in 1992, moved to Amelia Island, Florida before finally settling in Huntley, Illinois in 2003. Charles is survived by the love of his life, his wife Grace to whom he was married for 67 years, six children: Holly (Tim) Maloney, Tim (Cindy) Hammond, Dr. Robert (Lisa) Hammond, Karen (Barry) Driks, Christopher (Lynette) Hammond, and Tom (Jennifer) Hammond, 13 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Charles loved model trains and built an elaborate layout of one of the Pennsylvania Railroad systems in his basement after he retired. He was an avid fan of University of Michigan football and the Chicago Cubs. Services will be held at a later date.
