Stephen M. Newman
Stephen M. Newman, 73, of Elyria passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2020. He was born in Augusta, Maine on May 8, 1946, and grew up in Charleston, West Virginia. He earned a bachelor's degree at Muskingum University and a master's degree in education from the University of Akron. He began teaching special education at Midview High School, then spent the majority of his career at Elyria High School where he retired after 30 years. Steve was an active member of Temple B'nai Abraham in Elyria. He was a longtime Sunday school teacher and served for a term as president of the synagogue. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his wife JoAnn, going to Cavs games with his daughter, selling coins as a vendor at the local flea market, and attending his grandson's sporting events. Mr. Newman is survived by his beloved wife, JoAnn (nee Finegold); children, Jeremy (Rachel), Jason (Joyce), and Melissa (Sariel); grandchildren Elijah and Gideon. He supported many charitable causes and volunteered his time at places including the Elyria Public Library. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the Friendship Animal Protective League, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035. A private graveside service was held at Salem Cemetery, Lorain.
