Emily Wood Rankin
Emily Wood Rankin of Bloomfield, CT, died peacefully at home on June 15, 2019 at the age of 93. Emily was born in Phoenix, AZ to Henry and Mildred Wood. She graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1944 and Smith College in 1948. While in college she met her first husband, William Bailey. They were married in 1949, moved to Flushing, New York, and she worked for House Beautiful Magazine. In 1954 they moved to West Hartford, CT where they lived and raised their family for over twenty years. She was active in the lives of her children, including serving on their elementary school PTO and as a Girl Scout leader. Together they spent many happy seasons on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. She also enjoyed traveling and returned numerous times to the west coast. She later expanded her family with a marriage to E. Clair Rankin in 1992, and they enjoyed 18 years of music, travel, and laughter together in Bloomfield, CT. She was also devoted to her community, serving on the Boards of the American School for the Deaf, the Bridge Family Center, the West Hartford League of Women Voters, and the University of Hartford's Library Board of Visitors. She was president of the Hartford Smith College Club, and also a part of the Women's Auxiliary for the Hartford Seminary, Easter Seals, and the Institute of Living. She was a docent and later named an honorary docent at the Wadsworth Athenaeum and served on the Lecture Committee of the Hartford College for Women. She was a long time member of the Town and County Club, the Hartford Tennis Club, and the Hartford Golf Club. She had a wide circle of devoted friends with whom she shared interests in books, bridge, gardening, the Hartford Stage, the Hartford Symphony, and movies. She loved any chance to engage with interesting ideas and people. Her greatest legacy was teaching her family the power and value of friendship. In addition to many lifelong friends she leaves behind three children: George (Geb) Bailey (wife Marsha), Janet Bailey Faude, and Carolyn Bailey (partner Ramak Makooi); six grandchildren: Kai Bailey, Aquila Bailey, Sarah Faude (husband Dan Anderson), Paul Faude, Adriana Akers, and Dylan Akers; and two great-grandchildren: Alexia and Emerson. She also leaves her sister-in-law Anne Wood, niece Kathy Hatch, nephews George Doane and Robert Doane and their families. Her extended family includes four stepchildren, Linda Rankin, John Rankin (wife Nancy), Deborah Rankin, and Doug Rankin (wife Ann Reynolds); six step grandchildren; and seven step great-grandchildren. She is also survived by an incredible group of women who helped care for her in her last year of life. Emily was predeceased by two sons, John Bailey and Thomas Bailey, her brother George Wood, her husband E. Clair Rankin, and her son-in-law Wilson Faude. A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday August 17 at 11:30 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church, 679 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, CT. Arrangements made by the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel of Wethersfield. Burial will be private.
