In memory of
Faye Mitchell Arden - Helen Faye Mitchell died of natural causes on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Givens Estates in Asheville, NC with all her children at her side. She was 94 years old. Mrs. Mitchell was born Helen Faye Barnes December 19, 1923 in Birmingham, Alabama to Mattie and Ollie Barnes. She had two brothers, Jack and Robert, who lived to adulthood. Faye also had a twin brother Floyd and a sister Elizabeth who did not survive child birth. In 1941 Faye graduated Ensley High School in Birmingham with an Art Major diploma. Later, after the war in 1946 and 1947, Faye attended Auburn University where she studied Home Economics. It was perhaps these experiences that cultivated a life long love for preparing delicious desserts. These were often colorful cookies or flower adorned cakes. During the war she honed her lettering skills in the drafting department of the Tennessee Iron and Coal Company. With her beautiful lettering and handsome hand writing, Faye spent the decades following in written correspondence with family and friends. It was not unusual for her to send and receive what seemed to be hundreds of Christmas cards and letters each year. Faye married Jesse Lafayette Mitchell in August of 1947 and they remained married for 51 years until his death in September of 1998. They raised three children together in various cities; Hampton, Va; Wheaton, Md; and Greensboro, NC; before moving to the Asheville area in the summer of 1975. Both Faye and Jesse were devoted Christians and active members of the various churches to which they belonged. Her final church homes were Oak Forest Presbyterian and the Chapel at Givens Estates. Faye loved the natural world, in particular plants and birds. She had a special fondness for roses. Late in life she became enamored with butterflies. Faye was blessed with an amazing memory and was a repository for family stories and those of the people she knew. Sadly her memory was damaged when she suffered a stroke a decade ago. Even as Faye struggled with various health issues late in life she continued to find joy in friends and family and to enjoy reminiscing about them. Often this would result in the recall of a long forgotten story. She was well loved and will be missed. She is survived by her three children, Martha Virginia Mitchell, Jessica Faye Trentham and Joseph Hamilton Mitchell. In addition, she has two grand children and three great grand children. A Graveside Service will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Candler on Saturday, September 29 at 11:00 AM. In addition, there will be a service at the Norma F. Pulliam Chapel in Asbury Commons at Givens Estates on Sunday, September 30 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers it is requested that donations be made to the Red Cross to aid victims of Hurricane Florence. Moore Funeral Home at Forest Lawn is assisting the family. Please visit www.moorefh.net to sign the online guest book.
