Rev. Donald P. Schneider
Rev. Donald P. Schneider Ahwatukee - Reverend Donald P. Schneider passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, under hospice care in Ahwatukee, Arizona after a brief illness. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 16, 1931, Don attended Wauwatosa High School (class of '49), graduated from Carthage College (1953), received his Master of Divinity from Northwestern Lutheran Seminary in Minneapolis (1956), and was ordained on May 16, 1956 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Don married Shirley Sullivan in May of 1955 and together they raised three beautiful sons. An amazing partner in their 63 years of marriage, Shirley served faithfully by Don's side as a vital part of each of his ministries. A natural leader with a great servant heart, Pastor Schneider led and grew many strong churches throughout his career. His first opportunity to serve came as Pastor to St. Marks Lutheran Church in Circle Pines, Minnesota during seminary. Then, called by the United Lutheran Church in April of 1956 to develop a Mission in Sepulveda, California, Don brought his very young family across the country to establish a new worshipping community that was to become Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Northridge, California. For lack of better space and due to Don's great resourcefulness, the congregation met for the first two years in the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Future calls for Reverend Schneider included 11 years as Pastor of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in San Mateo, California (1966-1977), and two years leading a two-church merger at Lutheran Church of the Master in Sacramento, California. In 1980 Pastor Schneider accepted a call to a young mission congregation, Mountain View Lutheran Church, in Ahwatukee, Arizona, where he served for 16 years until he retired. There, he established most of the current campus and helped start the Ahwatukee Preschool, the Ahwatukee Senior Center, the Widowed Person Ministry, the Parish Nurse Program, and many other ministries of the church. During Don's time at Mountain View, the church generously shared their facilities to help start the local Catholic, Baptist, and Episcopal Churches in the area. Don was a charter member of the Ahwatukee Kiwanis Club, served on the Governor's Board for the aging, and was stewardship director for the Grand Canyon Synod. Donald Schneider is survived by a loving and devoted family: his wife Shirley, son Phillip (Shauna) Schneider of Poway, CA, son David (Kelley) Schneider of Phoenix, AZ, son Stephen (Nellie) Schneider of Tempe, AZ, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and brother Jerry Schneider of Mission Viejo, CA. A special note of thanks is given to Hospice of the Valley and Aegis at Redwood Assisted Living Home for their loving care and support. A Celebration of Life will take place on June 9, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Mountain View Lutheran Church in Ahwatukee, AZ. Memorial donations may be made to the Rev. Donald P. Schneider Seminary Scholarship Fund at the ELCA Fund for Leaders ( elca.org )-- Evangelical Lutheran Church in America/ ELCA Gift Processing Center P.O. Box 1806 Merrifield, VA 22116-8000.
