Kathleen J. Hughes
Kathleen J. Hughes Wilmington - Kathleen Joan Hughes, 89, of Maplecrest, passed away on January 24, 2018 at the home of her daughter. Kathy was a loving and generous person whose zest for life and keen mind predominated well into her late 80s. Kathy's most enduring quality was the pleasure she found in prioritizing the happiness of others over her own. An inveterate giver of gifts and talented craftswoman, Kathy's frequent presents, packaged in beautiful handmade boxes and lushly decorated, were a much anticipated feature of every holiday. Kathy was born on July 12, 1928, in Frackville, PA, to William and Gertrude McCafferty. In 1957, she married Robert T. Hughes, of Shenandoah, PA, and the couple moved to the Little Italy neighborhood of Wilmington in Delaware in the late 50s, before eventually settling in Maplecrest. Kathy was a long-time employee of Bell Telephone in Wilmington, retiring after 35 years. There, she and special friends who comprised the "Golden Girls" organized the Sunshine Club, a group originally formed to bring cheer to sick employees that blossomed into a series of regular luncheons and other associated activities to enhance overall morale. Despite serious challenges, including the loss of her much loved husband Bob at the young age of 52, and chronic diabetes, Kathy remained cheerful and optimistic; traveling and dining out with friends, reading and watching the ID channel, and caring for and finding joy in activities with her adored grandchildren. She also enjoyed many summers with friends and family at her beach home in Lewes. In addition to her husband, Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Cyril Roth. She will be very sadly missed by her daughter, Michele Peel, who cared for her over the past year, and son-in-law John Peel, of Middletown; her son, Robert T. Hughes, Jr. and daughter-in-law Celeste Williams-Hughes, of Fair Hill, MD; granddaughters, Kathleen and Alison Peel of Middletown; sister, Theresa Roth, of Pottsville, PA; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10:00am. Interment will be held in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 150 Monument Road, #100, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004 or to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Newark, DE 19713.
