CLARE GREGORY KASTNER RN
KASTNER, Clare Gregory RN Of Newton, MA, was born on April 5, 1943 in Wayland, MA, to her parents John and Barbara (Hulst) Gregory and died on April 15, 2017 at the de Rham Hospice Home in Cambridge, MA. She is survived by her husband, Peter Kastner (Newton, MA); her sons, Jonathan Kastner (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) and William Kastner (Bergenfield, NJ); her siblings, Brooke Gregory (La Serena, Chile), Sarah G. Smith (Belfast, ME), Hannah Pemberton (South Acton, MA), and Nicholas Gregory (Philadelphia, PA); and three grandchildren, Frances, Sam and Rufus. Clare graduated from Wayland High School in 1961. She attended Pembroke College at Brown University, where she engaged in civil rights activism working to expand voter registration in Alabama. After graduation in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Literature, she worked at The Philadelphia Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc., and then as a teacher in the New Careers Program at ABCD where she met her husband. She returned to school to earn a second bachelor's degree in Nursing from Boston University where she was selected to the National Nursing Honor's Society. Much of her career as a nurse was spent at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica Plain. During retirement, she dedicated much of her time to volunteering as a teacher's aide with The Mather Elementary School of Dorchester and working part-time for the City of Newton Health Department with their Visiting Nurses Program. Throughout her life, Clare was committed to building community, as a former Trustee of the First Unitarian Society in Newton, a member of the Journey Song Group, a volunteer at the Auburndale Community Library, and through her work at The Mather Elementary School. There will be a memorial service at the First Unitarian Society in Newton (1326 Washington Street, West Newton), Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 4pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Clare Kastner's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either The Mather Elementary School or the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry.
