In memory of
Barbara Holm Jones Collins
COLLINS Barbara Holm Jones Collins, 86, died peacefully on Good Friday, April 14, 2017, at The Bailey Center Hospice in St. Augustine, FL after a brief illness. She was born August 22, 1930, in Milwaukee, WI, to Rudolph Evelyn Holm and Marcella Shea Holm, the oldest of 3 daughters with 1 brother. She graduated from Wauwatosa High School in Milwaukee in 1948 and studied at the University of Wisconsin where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority before leaving to become a Stewardess with United Airlines in 1952. United Airlines expanded her sense of adventure for the world and evolved her passion for serving others, receiving wide acclaim from passengers. During a chance meeting in Chicago while both were working, she would meet and, in 1954, marry John Roberts (Jack) Jones, of Jacksonville, FL, a career United States Army officer with postings to Chicago, IL; South Korea; Yokohama, Japan; Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; and Mannheim Germany where he died at age 38, on March 10, 1964. After Jack's burial in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington DC, Barbara, age 33, and her five children moved from Germany to Jacksonville, FL to be near family and soon-to-be dear friends including other military widows and their children. While Christmas vacationing to Milwaukee in 1967, she would meet and later marry the second love of her life, James Wilhite Collins, of Indianapolis, IA, and she would bear her sixth child in 1968. After five wonderful years in Milwaukee connecting with old and new friends, they relocated to the warmth of East Palatka, FL in 1973 where they built their dream home on the St. Johns River and actively participated at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church in Elkton, FL and Saint Monica's Catholic Church in Palatka, FL. During their 34 years in Palatka, their home was the center of many loving gatherings of family and friends including two weddings, annual Thanksgiving flag football games, waterskiing, fishing and shrimping on the river, many parties and an open door to International Rotarians. Barbara also volunteered her services to the Ladies Guilds at Saint Ambrose and Saint Monica's, the Putnam County Historical Society and the League of Women Voters. Shortly after Jim's passing on June 10, 2007, Barbara moved to Allegro Senior Living in St. Augustine, FL where she quickly made new friends and became a cherished member of the community. She often said, If you can't be happy here, you can't be happy anywhere. She also found a new home at Saint Anastasia Catholic Church with family and friends and the loving priests, deacons and sisters who have so generously and graciously loved and cared for her and her family. Barbara will be forever remembered for her courage, grace and elegance and her devotion to family and her deep and abiding Catholic faith. Her greatest joy was in spending time with her children and grandchildren and treasured friends. Her beauty and charm turned many a head but her spirit and warmth changed, lifted and connected us with her love, each and all. She is a magnificent gift from God and we know you are as blessed as we to love her so dearly and we truly thank you. She was predeceased by husbands Major John R. Jones and James W. Collins, two sisters, Kathleen H. Dallman and Christene H. Jaeger, brother, Phillip Holm, brother-in-law, Arthur B. Jones and granddaughter, Lindsay E. Jones. She is survived by a sister-in-law Harriett Weant and by her children and spouses, John R. Jones, Jr (Teresa, fianc ) - St Augustine, FL, Kathleen J. Webermeier (Scott) - Estes Park, CO, Timothy S. Jones (Gayla) - Coral Springs, FL, Christopher B. Jones (Liz) - Atlanta, GA, Laura J. Little (Scott) - Orlando, FL, Peter H. Collins (Jennifer) - Tampa, FL, 23 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many special friends, including Frederick Grubb of St. Augustine. A vigil will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Craig Funeral Home in St. Augustine, Florida. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Saint Anastasia Catholic Church in St. Augustine with reception to follow in the Parish Community Center. The family will be forever grateful to the entire staff of The Bailey Center who so lovingly cared for Barbara in her final days.
