Robert Martin Shaar
SHAAR Robert Martin Shaar, age 89, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on April 13, 2017 from natural causes. Bob was born in Jacksonville, Florida on August 17, 1927. He attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Riverside. Following his school years he joined the Merchant Marines at the early age of 15 after fudging about his age. He went from the Merchant Marines to serving in the US Navy and was honorably discharged on July 28, 1949. Bob retired as a ships Quartermaster from the US Army Corps of Engineers after a lengthy and colorful career that included serving his country in Viet Nam in 1967. He served honorably in the North Atlantic theater, the Meditterean, Asiatic Pacific and Middle East and the liberation of the Phillipines. Bob is survived by 1 brother, James Patrick Shaar, 2 sisters, Patricia Ann Shaar and Alice Shaar Akel and a sister-in-law, Ellen Shaar. Four Children, Patt Shaar Caudell, Barbara Shaar Alexander, Linda Shaar Carlson and Paul Robert Shaar. He had five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Merridith Nelson, parents, Mike Shaar and Alice Shaar and four siblings Fred, Richard, Ruth and Vincent. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 20th with Vigil Prayers at 6:00 p.m. in Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 21st in San Jose Catholic Church, 3619 Toledo Rd, Jacksonville, Florida, with Rev. Rodolfo Godinez, followed by interment in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
