In memory of
B.J. "Bill" Ownby
Ownby, B.J. "Bill" Bill died on April 16, 2017, after a year-long battle with cancer. Bill was born on December 12, 1927 in Duncan, OK. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State University) in 1951 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1955, he went to work for D & O Engineering, Inc. in Wichita, and worked there until he retired in 2014. Bill was passionate about the game of football. In the 1960's, he was involved in the formation of the Greater Wichita Junior Football League, an organization committed to provide an opportunity for young men to play and learn the fundamentals of football in preparation for high school football. Bill coached in the league for all the years his sons participated in the program, but also stayed involved as an occasional coach for many years after that. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Grace Ownby, and his son, William Vaden Ownby. He is survived by his wife, Rustee; son, Ken Ownby (Adele); daughters, Lynn Ownby Hutcheson (John) and Ann Ownby Hicks (Mark); nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A small service is planned for family and close friends to remember his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or to the American Cancer Society.
