Benjamin Carrillo Sr.
Benjamin Carrillo, Sr. passed away April 12, 2017. He was born in April 7, 1921, in Randsburg, Calif. but grew up in Bakersfield working in grocery markets and restaurants. He served with the 40th Infantry Division as an ammunition sergeant in the Philippines' and Korea from 1944-1946. He became an ironworker for 10 years, constructing many projects in Kern County including canals, schools and the stadium at Bakersfield Junior College. The plumbing and air conditioning business was his next venture. He managed Nile St. Plumbing for Harold Wurtz. In 1979 Ben moved to Cayucos where he managed Ocean Ave. Hardware for three years and then went on to Amfac, Familian and Wennelson. He retired at 70 years of age. With his first wife, Verna (deceased), he had five children: Della Carrillo of Cayucos, Shirley (James) Poole of Bakersfield, Pat (Perry) Metcalf of Bakersfield, Ben, Jr. (Jill) of Bakersfield and youngest daughter Connie (Jim) Lindley of Mountain Home, Texas; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His second wife, Betty (deceased) had three daughters: Brenda Clark of La Mesa, Becky Glenn of Bakersfield and Jill (David) Linell of Bakersfield. Ben joined the Cayucos Lions Club in 1981. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2002, was a member of the 100% attendance club and served as Cayucos Lion's Club representative at regional and district conventions. He was Grand Marshall of the July 4th parade, served on many different committees and was the VFW rep at Los Osos Valley Memorial Day remembrances for over 20 years. In Cayucos, he served as honorary mayor for three years and was awarded the Cayucos Hall of Fame Award in 2003-2004. As a veteran, he was also given the Quilt of Valor. Ben was a true gentleman, a good friend to many, a wonderful father, grandfather and great-granddad. A Memorial in his name may be made to the Cayucos Lions Club or the Cayucos Fire Department.
