In memory of
Timothy P. Miller
YORK HARBOR - Timothy P Miller, a teacher and artist who inspired thousands of students at St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H., developed hundreds of talented skiers, and was an energetic fixture with his friends on the golf course, died on Monday, April 10, 2017 in York Harbor. Whether he was spinning clay, welding steel, ripping down a ski slope or swinging a golf club, Mr. Miller was quick with a smile and endless encouragement. "Do you see this negative space?" was one of his favorite lines to engage his students to look at art differently during his 25 years teaching at St. Paul's School. He was born in New Haven, Conn., in September 1940, and went to Nichols College for his undergraduate degree and received his MFA from Syracuse University. He could trace his family roots deep into the nation's past – he descends from Nathaniel Huntington, the 18th Governor of Connecticut (1796-1896), as well from the Perkins family, which had leadership roles in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Mr. Miller joined the art department staff of St. Paul's School in 1973, specializing in three-dimensional art. He taught nearly every aspect of the field, from visual design, ceramics, welding and casting to carving, woodworking, furniture and multimedia sculpture. Mr. Miller was also an accomplished sculptor, specializing in dramatic steel designs that he made in his studio in York Harbor. He also traveled to Italy (living there twice), where he carved marble in Carrera and cast bronze outside Florence. Mr. Miller was a superb skier, having raced in the 1950s. He coached skiing at St. Paul's School and also served on the New England Skiing Association board of directors. And he was secretly a cowboy at heart: His memories of riding and roping from summers at the E Bar L Ranch in Montana were always close at hand. Mr. Miller is survived by Margret Miller, his wife. He is also survived by his two children, Perkins Miller and Carrie Payne, from his first marriage to Helene Miller (who died in 1980) as well as four grandchildren: Elke, Sophie, Lilly and Em.
