In memory of
Edith Stegall
Edith Marie Hood Stegall, 81, passed away peacefully at her home in the Palmetto Community of Tupelo on Easter Sunday, April 15, 2017 after a long illness. A native of Baldwyn, Mississippi, she was born on March 9, 1936, the daughter of the late Vernon and Gladys Copeland Hood. On March 30, 1956, she was united in marriage to the late Royce Wayne Stegall of Pontotoc, MS. Edith was a telephone operator for South Central Bell in the 1950s before meeting her husband. She was an Army wife to Royce, living in Kansas, Germany and Kentucky before settling back home in Pontotoc to raise their daughters. In the early 1970s, she worked as a clerk for Lily, Nail, McKinney and Tate in Tupelo. In 1980, the family moved to the Palmetto community in Lee County, where they have lived for the past 37 years. From the late 80s until the store closed, she worked as an associate for Westbrook's women's clothing store in downtown Tupelo. Edith was a longtime member of Toxish Baptist Church in south Pontotoc county. After moving to Lee county, Edith and her family became active members of the Palmetto Baptist Church. In the mid 1980s, the family moved to the First Baptist Church of Verona, where Edith was very active with her Sunday School class, holding the position of class treasurer for many years. She was an avid gardener and reader, and she loved to travel. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and loved joking and reminiscing with her family and friends at gatherings. She frequented Young at Hearts social events in Tupelo, and even served as an officer for their group. She was an active member of the WoodmenLife Chapter 130 in Lee County, serving as a volunteer and member for the past 10 years. In recent years, she enjoyed attending bingo at both Tellini's and Chick Fila, and volunteered with the kitchen staff at West Jackson Street Baptist Church on Wednesday nights. Edith is survived by five daughters, Joyce Cox and husband Ed of Atlanta; Lisa Sheffield and husband Judge John Sheffield of Tupelo; Kelly Putz and husband Scott of Maryland; Jennifer King and husband Kenny of Tupelo; Patricia "Patty" Nokes and husband Joe, of Carrollton, MS. Edith is also survived by her sister, Janie Hood Ray and husband Nathan, and brother, Larry Hood and wife, Diane.
