ROGER NEAL CARPENTER, 88, died on Saturday, April 15, 2017. Born Nov. 4, 1928, in Indianapolis, Ind., he was a son of the late Carl and Dorthea Carpenter. Roger was raised in Fort Wayne and graduated from North Side High School as a Redskin. He served his country in the Marine Corps. in 1947 to 1949 and then joined the Army and was discharged with honors in 1952. Roger was married to Alice Joan Darnell in 1954; she preceded him in death in 2004. He worked for Tokheim, John Dehner Construction as a bookkeeper from 1962 to 1989 and several other jobs followed to avoid retirement. Surviving are his children, Candy Eastman, Lisa (George) Gerdes, Tammie (Gary) Hake, Tina Carpenter, Tracey Carpenter, Amy Gabbard, and Neil Carpenter. He was blessed with nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and a host of friends @ the V.F.W. Post 5582 in Columbia City. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, a brother, a granddaughter, a grandson, and a son-in-law. Military honors will be rendered at 2 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017, at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, with viewing from noon to 2 p.m. Entombment will follow in Covington Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or plants, please give memorials to Heartland Hospice in Indianapolis or buy a friend a beer and hot dog in his honor.
