ASHLEY — Max Wilbur Hamman, 91, peacefully passed away at his home on Sunday evening, April 16, 2017, with family at his side. According to his wishes, Max passed away as the fourth generation on the farm of his ancestors. Thank God for his 91 years of life. He was born Jan. 25, 1926, in Smithfield Township, DeKalb County to the late Ralph and Doris O. (Collins) Hamman. He was a 1944 graduate of Ashley High School. Mr. Hamman was a lifetime DeKalb County farmer. He married Doris A. Kohart on Sept. 23, 1945, in the Church of the Brethren in Fort Wayne, and she survives in Ashley. He was a member of the Waterloo United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the DeKalb County Indiana Genealogy Society, DeKalb Farm Bureau and DeKalb County Historical Society. Also surviving are four children and their spouses, Steven and Janice Hamman of Troy, Ohio, Joyce and Tim Shopp of Waterloo, Gary and Leslie Hamman of Auburn, and Shirley and Earl DeLong of Ashley; nine grandchildren, Scott (Betsy) Hamman of Troy, Ohio, Jeremy (Emily) Hamman of Beavercreek, Ohio, Stacy (Steven) Barry of Fort Wayne, Jennifer (Brandon) Huth of Auburn, Sarah (Michael) Bay of Butler, Natalie (Frederick) Clark of Lafayette, Elizabeth (Bret) Arthur of Fort Wayne, Willis (Koreen) DeLong of Leo, and Thomas DeLong of Waterloo; a granddaughter-in-law, Emily Shopp of Rocky River, Ohio; 16 great-grandchildren and two on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Wilma Kern; a brother, Wayne Hamman; and a grandson, Michael Shopp. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 875 S. Wayne St., Waterloo, with the Rev. Michael Halferty officiating. Burial will take place at Waterloo Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Scott Hamman, Jeremy Hamman, Steven Barry, Brandon Huth, Willis DeLong, Bret Arthur and Thomas DeLong and an honorary pallbearer, Michael Bay. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Waterloo United Methodist Church or the DeKalb County Horsemen's Association.
