Willard Gordon "Bill" Cumpston
Willard "Bill" Gordon Cumpston of Slippery Rock, West Liberty Borough, passed away peacefully at 3:35 a.m. Saturday at his home with his family at his side. Bill was born May 17, 1942, in Barbourville, W.Va., to Willard Cecil Cumpston and Margaret Macy Plybon Cumpston. He married Mary Alyce Stewart Feb. 1, 1974, and she preceded him in death April 26, 2009. Bill was a U.S. Army veteran where he served as a construction engineer. Following his honorable discharge, he worked construction in all fields of retail lumber sales. Local companies he worked for included McGowan Lumber in the 1960s and 1970s, Lezzer Lumber in the 1980s and Oaks & McClelland Lumber in the early 1990s. During his time at McGowan Lumber, his work included operating heavy equipment in the formation of Kelly Boulevard and immediate surroundings to develop the shopping center and adjacent sites for commercial and residential construction. Bill was a member and past master of the F&AM Lodge 800, now referred to as Lodge 603, in Grove City. He was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church, and he enjoyed hunting, golf and building things. Survivors include his son, Shawn Cecil (Amy) Cumpston of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Brandy Sue Webb and Margaret Macy Cumpston, both of Slippery Rock; three step-sons, Dale E. Jamison of East Brady, Robert S. (Judy) Jamison of Karns City and Michael R. Jamison of New Castle; one stepdaughter, Michele L. McGinty of Slippery Rock; one daughter-in-law, Susan P. Jamison of Butler; four sisters, Nancy Carol Patterson of Portersville, Alice Rebecca Montgomery of Grove City, Gretchen Mae Cumpston of Harrisville and Sally Joyce (Kenneth) Bludorn of Slippery Rock; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and his stepson, Richard C. Jamison. CUMPSTON - Friends of Willard "Bill" Gordon Cumpston, who died Saturday, April 15, 2017, may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, with the Rev. Willard Morse, retired pastor, and Rev. James Lewis of Butler presiding. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Full military honors will be accorded at the interment at the West Liberty Cemetery.
