In memory of
SHADE - Leola "Lee" Guthrie passed away peacefully to be with her Lord on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Kimes Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Athens just two days after her 105th birthday. The second of six children born to Opha and Mary Myrtle Runyon Stover, Leola moved with her family from her hometown in Braxton, West Virginia to the Shade/Guysville area at a young age. At age 21 she married her soulmate Ralph Willis Guthrie and over the next 63 years raised their family on their farm in Shade. They raised draft horses, cattle, sheep, crops and three children. Known simply as "Lee" or grandma Guthrie, Lee retired as school cook at Shade Elementary School. She loved cooking, quilting, gardening and singing gospel music. Friends and neighbors often stopped by to visit and have coffee, and if they were lucky, a slice of her apple pie. She was a woman of strength and will be remembered for her honesty, generosity and spirit. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, and parents and her sons Ralph, Jr. and Otis Guthrie; her siblings, Georgia Moore Allen, Nelly Foster, Glenna Collura, Otis Stover and Victor Stover, as well as her grandchildren, Darren Guthrie and Stan Ragan. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou (Jim) Rigg; sister-in-law, Myrtle Stover; daughters-in-law, Ramona Herman and Sheila Guthrie; surviving grandchildren are Gerlene "Geri" (Daniel) Canter, Daniel (Susan) Guthrie, Dana "Frank" (Mary Beth) Guthrie, Angela Hansen, Denton (Lori) Guthrie, David Guthrie, Delvin (Autumn) Guthrie, Tina (Kevin) Coey, Theresa (Kenny) Moorhouse, Tammy (JP) Goodin. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday one hour prior to the service.
