Paul Emery Hanson
Paul Emery Hanson March 23, 2017 Paul Emery Hanson died at home on March 23, 2017 in Fort Myers, Florida with his wife Ruth and youngest daughter Joan at his side in the last days. Emery was born in Brockton, MA on July 15, 1922 to Emile and Gladys Hanson. Emery's life was a long life, well and generously lived. Emery is survived by his wife Ruth Hanson, four children, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, sister-in-law Janet Gassler, and many nieces and nephews. Emery's first wife of 52 years, Merrilyn (Carlson) Hanson, died in 1995. His children are Mark (Janis) Hanson, Gale Hanson (Vin Vilkas), Glenn (Deb McGill) Hanson, and Joan (Dave) Peterson. Emery attended Leominster High School in Massachusetts, North Park College in Chicago, and the University of Minnesota (mechanical/industrial engineering). After graduation, he married Merrilyn Carlson and took his first job with Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee. In the U.S. Navy, he served in WW II in the Pacific Theater as a radar officer on a troop transport (USS Crenshaw) which participated in operations at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Emery returned to Allis Chalmers after the war and he and Merrilyn started a family. Emery and Merrilyn moved their young family to Leominster, MA in 1954 where he became owner and president of Gould Industrial Supply Company. After retirement and the death of Merrilyn, he moved to Fort Myers. He and Ruth Thompson, who had also lost a spouse, found each other and were happily married in 2000 for 17 years. At each stage of his long life, Emery was active in a church community. Churches include the Milwaukee Evangelical Covenant Church, the Pilgrim Covenant Church in Lunenburg, MA, and the Safe Harbor Community Church of Fort Myers, FL. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. A memorial service will be held April 22, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Safe Harbor Community Church in Fort Myers with an internment service June 17, 2017 in Leominster, MA. Memorials may be given to Safe Harbor Community Church of Fort Myers.
