In memory of
Betty Jean Sunofsky
Betty Jean Sunofsky It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce that our cherished Mother, Grandmother, and Great-grandmother, Betty Jean Sunofsky (nee Cockriel) died on April 8, 2017. She suffered a fall at her home eleven days earlier and was unable to bounce back. Until her passing she was very involved with life, which included top billing for her family. In addition to the love and attention she showered on them she was also a member of P.E.O., Assistance League and many other charitable organizations. She loved theatre, music, and playing cards and games with friends and family. Born in San Dimas, CA on February 7, 1924 to Bovee and Florence (Duncan) Cockriel, she lived the majority of her life in Long Beach, CA. She had one brother, John Cockriel, who preceded her in death. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Betty ventured off to Washington State and graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Home Economics. This was quite an accomplishment since she was the first in her family to graduate from college. After graduation she moved to Palm Springs, CA where she was a Home Economics teacher. While there, she met and married her beloved husband, Frank Swann Sunofsky, to whom she was happily married until his passing in 1994. Once married, she returned to Long Beach and focused her life on being a mother, wife, and homemaker. Betty was also an avid sailor and she and Frank were long-time members of ABYC. Together they had three children, first a daughter, Carol Jean Sunofsky, who lives in San Diego with her spouse, Diane; and then they had twins, Jan Alise Sunofsky Kern, who lives in Incline Village, NV with her spouse, Rick; and John Frederick Sunofsky, who lives in Lakewood with his spouse, Barbara. Betty was the grandmother of Elisabeth Kern Anderson, Ryan Kern, Alyssa Sunofsky Hartel, Andrew Sunofsky, Stacie Sunofsky Warren, and Kelly Sunofsky. Her greatest joy in the last year of her life was becoming a great grandmother to Avery Jean Anderson, who blessed her with endless smiles and love. Private services are being held. In lieu of flowers, please make a Tribute Gift in Betty's name to the Assistance League of Long Beach, 6220 E. Spring St., Long Beach, CA 90815 or online at https://app.etapestry.com/cart/AssistanceLeagueofLongBeach/default/index.php A reception to celebrate Betty's long and happy life will be held at the home of John and Barbara Sunofsky, 4158 Fleethaven Rd., Lakewood, CA on Saturday, April 22 from 3-5pm.
