In memory of
Joan Lee Danielsen
Niantic - Joan Lee Danielsen, 84, of Niantic died on April 8, of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Joan was born to Hubbard Mather Lee and Elizabeth Wilcox Lee on Sept. 7, 1932, in New London at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. She was a Harbor School graduate and attended Williams Memorial Institute until her final year when she moved with her family to Bethesda, Md.and graduated from Bethesda/Chevy Chase High School. She was a 1953 graduate of Montgomery College where she earned an Associates of Arts degree in arts and science. She was married to deceased U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Arnold "Dan" Danielsen in 1956 in Yarmouth, Maine and had three sons, Paul of Madison, Peter of Greenwich and David of Westborough, Mass., and five grandchildren, Kathryn, Eric, Julia, William, and Elizabeth who survive her. Her brother, Hubbard Wilcox Lee, is deceased. Anyone who knew Joan knows that she cared deeply about her kids, the beach, the Coast Guard, her friends, her home and all of the creative projects that she was always tackling. From crewel to pinecone wreaths, to shell and sea glass collecting, to needlepoint and cross stitch she was never one to sit still…she always had a project going. A never-ending and gracious hostess who decorated homes all across the country - from military quarters on Governors Island and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to apartments on Staten Island and Monterey, Calif., and homes from Hawaii to Cleveland, Ohio - she always had great taste and confidence in her decisions. Her family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association. They also wish to thank the caring team at Shoreline Care Co. and the staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. At her request, there will be no memorial service. She will be interred at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy columbarium with her husband at a future date. Byles Memorial home, 99 Huntington St., New London is assisting with the arrangements.
