Shirley R. Holmes
Shirley Holmes Shirley Rae Holmes, nee Carmichael, born December 1, 1932 in E. St. Louis, Ill., and died on February 11, 2017 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Shirley was a January 1951 graduate of East St. Louis Senior High School. Early in her life she was employed by Laclede Steel, Rawling's Athletic Company and Miss Hickey's School of Business. Later, and for, many years she was the office manager of Upchurch Insurance in Cahokia, Ill. For several years after, she worked in the offices of Lana and Shelby Pollack. In the early 1980s she owned and operated The Bookshoppe on N. High in Belleville. In 1988 she and her husband founded Educational Concepts, Ultd., a pre-licensing school in Belleville, and she served as operating CEO and teacher until the business was sold to Thomas Ripperda. She was a long-time member of Caseyville Crossroads Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. At various times she was a church school teacher, a choir member, and chaired or served on many committees of the church. At the time of her death, she was co-chair of the Hospitality Committee and was an assistant Financial Secretary. She was preceded by her parents, William Lloyd and Hazel Carmichael, nee Renollet. Shirley is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dr. Ken Holmes; her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Diane Holmes; grandsons, Jason (Holmes) and Kare Joelner and Jonathan (Holmes) and Beth Joelner; three great-grandchildren, Rylie Joelner, Will Joelner, and Cayden Joelner; sister, Adeline Wallace Waldron; nieces, Linda (Ted)Waldron Hagadorn of Dupo, Cecelia (Robert) Waldron Zavaglia of Denver, and Margaret Roe of Washington, D.C. Also surviving are great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great nieces and great-great-nephews; and a host of good friends, including Ann, Judy, and Mary. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to the Good Samaritan Fund made payable to Crossroads Christian Church, Caseyville, Ill.
