In memory of
Kathleen Wellicome Weeks
Kathleen Wellicome Weeks, 94, died April 13, 2017 in Athens, Georgia. She was born December 21, 1922 in Sutton Surrey (London) England to the late Rupert and Minnie Hillier Wellicome. Kathy served in the British Women's Land Army (WLA) during World War II, doing agricultural work to help provide Britain with food at a time when German U-boats were destroying many merchant ships bringing supplies to Britain. She also met and became engaged to a U.S. serviceman, Edward Silas Weeks. After the war, she came to the U.S. where she and Eddie were married in Maryland. Continuing his military service career, Eddie and Kathy lived in Hawaii, Japan and several U.S. stations before settling in Tucker, GA where they lived for over 40 years. During those years, Kathy was involved with school, church and scouting activities as she and Eddie reared their three sons. She was a dedicated mother who joked that she always seemed to draw Boy Scout Christmas tree sale duty on her birthday December 21st. One of Kathy's proudest recollections is that all three of her sons served in the U.S. Army and between her husband Eddie and their three sons, there was a combined 90 years of military service to the nation. Kathy also worked for Hastings Nursery and later for the IRS from which she retired. She was an accomplished gardener, seamstress and needlework artist, all of which she greatly enjoyed. She also loved to travel, especially trips back to England with Eddie. After Eddie's death, she moved to Harbor Club on Lake Oconee in 2001, where she enjoyed living until health issues brought her to Morningside of Athens in 2014. Kathy was a long-time, faithful member of Tucker First United Methodist Church, and after relocation, of Walker United Methodist Church near Greensboro. In addition to her husband of 53 years, Kathy was predeceased by her son, Edward S. Weeks, Jr., sister, Marjorie Fenn and brother, Leslie Wellicome. She is survived by sons Robert M. Weeks (Suzie) of Odin IL and Richard T. Weeks of Fayetteville NC; daughter-in-law Elaine Lunsford Weeks of Danielsville GA; step-daughter Kathy Haynes (Curry) of White Plains GA; and sister Gwen (Howard) Ferrell of Wolcott NY. Sincere appreciation is expressed to the staffs of Home Instead, Morningside of Athens, and St. Mary's Home Hospice for their attentive care. Family and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, 3000 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA, where a graveside service will immediately begin at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Rd., Greensboro, GA 30642. www.floralhillsfuneral.com
