In memory of
Anita Charlotte Schwertley
Anita Charlotte Schwertley Beloved Wife and Mother Devoted Friend to many Anita Schwertley passed away peacefully in the company of loved ones on April 11, 2017. She was born April 4, 1921 in Harrison County, Iowa, on the family farm. She had many great tales to share regarding life on a farm in Iowa during the Great Depression. She is predeceased by her husband, Donald Schwertley, whom she married in 1940 in Iowa. They soon moved to Southern California in search of the economic opportunities promised by the growing war effort, and ultimately settled in Long Beach upon Don's return from the Pacific Theatre in December 1945. It was a love story of 44 years until his death in 1984. Anita is survived by two children, Donita Van Horik (John Fielder) of Long Beach, and Gary Schwertley (Paulette) of Edmonds, Washington, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She loved all of them without reservation. Anita retired as a School Secretary from the ABC Unified School District at age 70, and was extremely active in her retirement. She loved dancing of any kind, travel, reading, crafts, camping, and gardening. She was a regular volunteer for Meals on Wheel of Long Beach for over 25 years, and participated in Silver Sneakers fitness classes at the Alpert JCC. Generous of heart, time and spirit, Anita had many friends. She will be missed by all. Memorial services are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in memory of Anita to Meals on Wheels, Long Beach, or the Long Beach Day Nursery. Please sign the guestbook at www.presstelegram.com/obits
