In memory of
Eric Scott Avery
Eric Scott Avery Etters Eric Scott Avery, esteemed by family, friends, colleagues and professors alike, passed away at his home in Etters after a long illness. He was 39. He was born in Hartford, CT on November 1, 1976 to Linda (Owl) Durie and Robert C. Avery. Eric was a doctoral candidate and senior scientist at Towson University in Towson, MD, on the verge of completing his Doctor of Science in Information Technology. He was the co-author of "Improvements in robot navigation through operator speech preferences," published in Paladyn, Journal of Behavioral Robotics (2012) and several other applied and academic papers. His research interests included cognitive robotics, computer image processing, human-computer interaction, and application development. Eric graduated from Windsor (Connecticut) High School in 1995, earned a Bachelor of Arts in computer science from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA in 2000, and a Master of Science in computer science from Towson University in 2006. His most recent adventure in robotics was as a computer scientist and software engineer for the United States Army Research Laboratory at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, where he worked on advanced robotics, artificial intelligence and robotic spatial recognition in field settings. He also worked for Johnson Controls, designing automated manufacturing systems for industrial climate control systems, and for Lycoming College keeping their computer servers running for both students and staff. Sporting his signature pony tail (not depicted above), which he wore proudly despite it not being in vogue during the decades he wore it, and which finally succumbed to the barber's sheers in 2008 (and donated to kids with cancer), Eric will be remembered for his affable personality, great smile and sarcastic sense of humor. Interested in mystics as diverse as Jim Morrison, whose portrait, via concert poster, adorned Eric's first college dorm room, and Albert Einstein, light bedtime reading, Eric could just as easily be found working on his car or contemplating life in the woods of Sandisfield, MA. He is survived by his mother, Linda (Owl) Durie and her husband, David Durie of Sun City Center, FL; his father, Robert Avery of West Hartford, CT; his brothers, Kent Avery and wife, Demetra Giatas of Portland, ME and Reed Avery and wife, Tina of Chester, WV; and his sister, Lori DeAngelis and husband, Richard of Lakeland FL; and seven nieces and nephews, Truman Avery, Henry and Ethan DeAngelis, and Eleanor, Linus, Adelaide and Clementine Avery. A celebration of life memorial gathering will be held at the family's convenience, with details to be announced. Donations in Eric's memory may be made to Robotics and Beyond, 30 Bridge Street, Suite 204, New Milford, Connecticut 06776-3517.
