Duncan Waldo Holt Jr.
HOLT, JR., Duncan Waldo Duncan Waldo Holt, Jr., a longtime resident of Dallas, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2017 at the age of 95. He was born on October 3, 1921 to Helen Knauer Holt, a native of Denison, TX and Dr. Duncan Waldo Holt, a distinguished physician from McLeansville, NC. Raised in Greensboro, NC, Duncan graduated from Greensboro High. An Eagle Scout, he attended the 1937 World Scout Jamboree in the Netherlands. Duncan entered Duke University as an undergraduate in the Class of 1943. In 1942 he interrupted his studies to enlist in the U.S. Army where he served as tank commander in the Pacific, eventually stationed in the Philippines. After being honorably discharged, Duncan resumed his undergraduate studies at Duke University. He went on to obtain his J.D. from Duke University School of Law. At Duke, Duncan's sister, Betsy, the late Mrs. Tom Jennings, introduced him to Daphne Mahon Holt, daughter of Helen and The Honorable George H. Mahon who was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from west Texas. The couple married in 1947 in Washington, D.C. After law school, Duncan worked as an attorney for the IRS. In 1953, he left the public sector for a job as an oil and gas attorney, working in Houston and Tulsa. In 1972, Duncan transferred to ARCO's Dallas office. He lived in Dallas for the remainder of his life. In 1993, cancer took the life of his beloved spouse, Daphne. In 1995, he married Jean Hull Suman, whom he had known at Duke. Jean Holt died in 2015. Duncan was active in Spring Valley United Methodist Church for many years and enjoyed a large circle of friends. He was an avid sports fan especially of Duke basketball and the Dallas Cowboys. A loving and supportive father, Duncan is survived by his children and their spouses and his grandchildren: George Mahon Holt and his wife, Virginia Cleary and stepson Will Cleary, Betsy Helen Holt Davis and her husband, William Kenneth Davis, Laurel Ann Holt Luper and her husband, John Frank Luper, and their children Haley Elizabeth Luper and Dylan John Luper. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Stuart Owen for his decades of excellent care, Cira Velasquez, the 3rd floor staff of Windsor Sr. Living and the wonderful caregivers from All-Star Hospice. A private family graveside will be held in the future. The family requests any memorials be made to a charity of your choice.
