In memory of
Maija Kronke passed away on Sunday, February 12, one day short of her 94th birthday, at Mt Baker Care Center in Bellingham, Washington. She was comforted by family and the caring Mt Baker staff, and surrounded by treasured objects from her life with her beloved late husband, Dale. Maija was born in Parlier, California on February 13, 1923, to John and Saima (Rosengren) Wall. Both parents were immigrants from Finland who settled in the farming community of Reedley, California. Maija attended UC Davis where she completed a two-year certificate in agriculture and met her future husband, Dale Garten Kronke, who was also a student there. The two married in Reedley on July 17, 1943, after a courtship through letter-writing during Dale's military service. Daughter Valynn (Kronke) Valandani was born in 1945 while they were stationed in Salt Lake City, Utah. After the war the family settled in Reedley, helping on Maija's father's farm and establishing their own, growing primarily peaches, plums, and nectarines. Letter writing was a thread that ran through Maija's life, connecting her to family and friends, near and far. She enjoyed farming, growing and cooking good food, reading, bird-watching, and sharing meals with family. Those who knew her remember her sense of humor, kindness, and generosity. She is survived by her daughter Val and granddaughters Monica and Jasmine Valandani.
