George William 'Bill' Brown SPARTANBURG, SC-- George William 'Bill' Brown, 92, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at Valley Falls Terrace. Born February 5, 1925, in Rowan County, NC, he was a son of the late Ray W. and Mary E. Wagoner Brown and the last surviving member of his immediate family. A graduate of Rockwell North Carolina High School, Mr. Brown attended Catawba College and was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Brown was the retired owner of Brown Opticians, founding member and a past president of the SC Association of Opticians, a past member of the SC Board of Examiners in Opticianry and Board member of The Opticians Association of America, The National Academy of Opticians, and honored recipient of the SC Optician of the Year Award. As a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, he served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday School teacher, and choir member, as well as being elected as Elder Emeritus. He was also a member and past president of the Civitan Club of Spartanburg and on behalf of the State of SC received the Honored Naval Veteran Award presented by the governor. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Velma Willard Brown; children, Stewart Deane Brown of Spartanburg, SC, William Grant Brown (Sandra) of Woodruff, SC, Cynthia Brown Overcash (Edward) of Spartanburg, SC, and Bunny Brown McKown of Chesnee, SC; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Ray Brown; sister, Helen Earnhardt; and son-in-law, Paul Thomas McKown. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Robert H. Brozina. Visitation will follow the service. Burial, with military rites, will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 4, 2017, in Grace Lower Stone Church Cemetery, Rockwell, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 880 W. O. Ezell Blvd., Spartanburg, SC 29301. An online guest register is available at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel
