Rosemary Tung Chow
Dr. Rosemary Tung Chow COLUMBIA - Dr. Rosemary Tung Chow, beloved mother of Peter C. Chow, Stella C. Chow, and Dr. Jim C. Chow, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at her home. She was born in Beijing, China on June 11, 1918 where she graduated first in her class from Peking Medical School, specializing in internal medicine. After leaving China in 1948, she and her husband, Thomas, a general surgeon, assisted in the founding of the first Catholic Hospital in Taiwan in 1955, and in 1966 they worked with the World Health Organization headquartered in the Sahara Desert Basin headquartered in Benghazi, Libya. In 1972, Rosemary moved to the United States to join her children who were all students here. She became a staff physician with the SC State Park Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Columbia and in 1983, the TB Control Board moved to DHEC, and she became a traveling consultant to the county health departments until she retired at the age of 71. Rosemary was honored to be selected as 2000 SC Mother of the Year, an organization very close to her heart as it celebrated what she did best, caring for others, nurturing young minds, and guiding them until the very end. She has been instrumental in the support of many of her nieces, nephews, and international students pursuing their undergraduate and graduate education. She was a member of the Chinese Christian Church of Columbia. Rosemary is also survived by her sister, Lily Tung Hwa, her brother, Dong Ren Lin and her grandchildren, Dr. Thomas Chow, Curtis Chow, Dr. James Chow, Dr. Elicia Skelton, Aron Skelton, Kelsey Chow, Forrest Chow, and Kiersten Chow as well as two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Rose Chow and David Nolan Chow. Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Thomas C. Chow. A private graveside service will be held on Friday, February 17, 2017. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Thomas C.
