NOBLES, JOHN HENRY, JR. Alachua County Sheriff's Office Retired Lieutenant John Henry Nobles, Jr. passed on to Heaven Tuesday, February 14, 2017 after a sudden unexpected illness. Born June 23, 1948, John Henry Nobles, Jr., a lifelong resident of Alachua County, was an avid fisherman, enjoyed camping, music, and had a very quick wit. John was an excellent storyteller. He was loved by many. In 1965, at the age of 17, John proudly served in the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade, serving 3 years including a tour in Vietnam. Hired by Sheriff Joe Crevasse March 13, 1975, John obtained his certification as a Law Enforcement Officer through the State of Florida on May 9, 1975, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Sergeant on July 1, 1979 and then to Lieutenant on May 7, 1983. During his time at the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, Lt. Nobles was a part of the Patrol Division, Warrants Division, and was the Officer in Charge of the Crime Prevention Unit. In addition to his normal duties, Lt. Nobles was the Officer in Charge of the Marine Patrol Search and Rescue Unit and a member of the Tactical Response Squad. Lt. Nobles was a certified law enforcement instructor with specialized training in both driving and firearms instruction, and was certified as a National Rifle Association (NRA) Police Sharpshooter. Lt. Nobles received countless certificates and awards including Officer of the Year. He proudly served as Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigation Division for 9 years. Lt. Nobles retired from the ACSO on March 13, 2000, after 25 years of dedicated and faithful service to our community. Lt. Nobles was a Christian and was preceded in death by his daughter, Sara Nobles, and is survived by his wife Deborah Lynn Nobles (Cook), his children April Nobles and John E. Nobles, and his grandchildren Evan Nipper, Jeremy Nipper, and J. Collin Nobles who is carrying on his grandfather's legacy as a Deputy with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office. The Nobles family is holding a viewing for Lt. Nobles on Friday, February 17th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Forest Meadows Funeral Home located at 725 NW 23rd Avenue in Gainesville. Funeral services for Lt. Nobles will be held on Saturday, February 18th at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Gainesville located at 14105 NW 39th Avenue with internment immediately following at Forest Meadows Cemetery West located at 700 NW 143rd Street in Newberry.
